So today we got a little sneak peek of a new Lord of the Rings game titled Lord of the Rings: Gollum developed by Daedalic Entertainment for the PS5 and the X Box series X.
Although the teaser doesn't reveal much as far as the gameplay goes, we do have some information from an interview from the lead narrative designer Tillman Shanen with IGN.
In the interview, Shanen reveals that the player will always either play as Smeagol or Gollum, as the dominant persona and that can affect everything including the animations you see, soundscapes, gameplay situations, and in-game dialogue. In other words, the decisions you make will affect the way the game feels.
Gollum isn't strong but instead crafty, which will give you some opportunities to take out enemies in otherwise predominantly stealth-focused gameplay. Some enemies can be taken down with stealth attacks or lured into dangerous parts of the environment, some of which might feature familiar characters that can aid Gollum on his journey.
"It is mostly a non-combat game, but Gollum will be able to stealthily take out enemies," explained lead game designer Martin Wilkes. "However, this will not be easy and always come with big risks. We want players to carefully weigh these encounters. After all, Gollum's strengths lie in cunning not combat."
As far as the story goes, you of course will play as Smeagol or Gollum in a story that runs parallel to the adventure of Frodo, on a different side of middle earth. You'll make decisions that align with one of the character's personas as they fight for control
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is set to launch sometime in 2021 exclusively for next-generation consoles and PC. Gameplay will only be shown in 2021, according to developer Daedalic Entertainment.
